Birchbox October 2012: goop

Oh, Birchbox, how much I love thee!

For only $10 a month (and free shipping), I’m getting high-quality, fun samples of beauty products. This month’s Birchbox is worth far more than $10. I earn points for reviewing the products and placing orders, too. Every 100 points can be redeemed for $10 in product. Sweet!

This month’s Birchbox theme:

I had no idea what this meant. I thought maybe it was a style of makeup, a brand of makeup, a new trend…

But then when I read this:

Explanation… sort of… of goop

I was confused because all I could think of was Gwenyth Paltrow. I’ve never been to her blog, but had heard about it on the radio. {This was usually when people were making fun of her posts. Boy the world can be harsh. But, hey, it’s still publicity, I guess.} I did as I was told and headed over to check it out.

It was not what I expected., which I expected to be a blog, was actually a website {founded by Paltrow} listing a collection of items chosen by the “goop staff”, as well as a collection of recipes and such. Think Oprah’s Favorite Things in O Magazine, if you will. With nothing to lose, I signed up for the weekly email.

While I tried a Gwenyth Paltrow recipe spin on Tuna Niçoise that I wasn’t particularly mad about, I am still intrigued by her recipe section. I just may test out a recipe or two and post the results here. Anything you’d like to see?

But back to the box…

The box included what they call “goop must-try essentials”:

I always love the way my Birchboxes are so carefully packaged!

These items were wrapped in the tissue paper.

Again…Why send two items of the same type of product? It’s almost as if we should compare them against each other.

So how should I use these two items so that they correctly exhibit their effectiveness? Should I use both at the same time? Use one until it runs out? I know that anti-aging products tend to take a while before results can be seen. Is there enough product there to show me results and make me want to buy them? How am I supposed to truly evaluate them if I use them at the same time?

Here are my thoughts on the contents this month:

beautyblender – a sponge designed to blend your makeup flawlessly

  • This is The Best Thing I Never Had That I Never Knew I Needed.
  • I love the way it feels and the way it works.
  • A package of two is $25.95, so I would have probably never bought this off the shelf otherwise. This also means that this one item is valued more than I paid for the Birchbox.

Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss – Charm Color

  • I rarely wear gloss and even less lipstick, but my husband wishes I would. Here’s a start to make me do so.
  • Description on my Birchbox card reads “Luscious lips are a swipe away with this non-sticky gloss, which delivers a subtle plumping effect that lasts all day.” I thought the gloss was sticky, but since I don’t usually wear anything on my lips, I don’t really know how they define that. All day? Again, not sure how that is defined. It came off with my morning coffee. But I expected that. Maybe it lasts “all day” on models who don’t eat or drink all day.
  • Despite the fact that it was sticky, I still really liked it, especially the cute little sample I received. It will be going with me everywhere until I decide that I must wear something on my lips or I’ll feel naked. I will be girly. I will.

DDF Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer

  • They must have known I just had a birthday. I’ve been feeling the effects of age. It’s time I try out some spot and wrinkle minimizers. However, they can be so expensive and you don’t see results for a period of time. It’s hard to spend a ton of money on something you aren’t sure if it’s going to be right for you. Enter the sample.
  • I don’t know if my skin was “instantly smoother” as stated, but the serum was nice. I was a little confused, however, if I should use moisturizer in conjunction with it.
  • How long will it take for me to notice some sort of difference? The Birchbox website says, “within the first week of use.” I hope the sample is for at least that length of time. If I’m wowed, I can truly make up my mind.

Marie Veronique Organics – Anti-aging Oil +

  • Okay,  both the DFF and this product are meant to be rubbed on for wrinkles.
  • The Birchbox site states, “Rub a few drops of oil between your palms, and then massage onto your face and neck. You can also gently dab this oil around your eye area.”
  • The DFF Wrinkle Resist Pore Minimizer said to apply to face and neck as well. Do you see my dilemma on when/how to use these to come up with a fair assessment of these products?
  • In the end, I decided to use the DFF for face and neck and this anti-aging oil for around the eyes.
  • The verdict is still out. Anti-aging products take a while to take effect.
  • I love that this product has natural ingredients with loads of antioxidants.
  • The full-size bottle (1-ounce) is $80. Hell yeah, that I got a sample to try it out first!

Luna Bar – Lemon Zest Flavor

  • I already eat Luna Bars. They are a tasty treat and pack protein. They can be a great pre-run snack if I haven’t eaten for a few hours.
  • However, they also pack a lot of sugar, so moderation is key.
  • I typically like my protein bars to be in peanut butter or chocolate form, but I did buy this flavor on my own on a whim when my local natural food store had them on sale for just 99 cents.
  • I actually like the lemon zest flavor! They kind of taste like a lemon bar, but with more filling fiber. This one, I ate as dessert, which is something I never do with Luna Bars!
  • Birchbox offers a pack of 15 for $18.75, which I think isn’t too bad. When I find a *really good* sale, they are about a buck a piece, but are usually more.

I’m still loving my Birchbox, so I’ll continue to receive the package that makes me happy each month. Curious about Birchbox? You can check it out here and sign up if you’d like. Really, what do you have to lose?!

Curious what was in my last two boxes? Check them out here:
