Foodie Penpal from Idaho

Standard

Have I mentioned how much I love Foodie Penpals?!

One thing I absolutely love about the program is that I’m matched with different people from different regions of the U.S. every month. And they almost always send something from where they are from. I adore that!

This month, my Foodie PenPal box was sent from Amber, all the way from Idaho! {No, she didn’t send me potatoes.} Though I do love potatoes, she was a little more clever than that. 😉

Sage Milk Chocolate

Sage Milk Chocolate from Boise

This was the first thing I unwrapped and dug into from the box. Sage and milk chocolate? Who knew?! It’s an excellent combination. I promptly broke the bar up into pieces to put in my lunches for the week. You know, I do eat a little bit of chocolate every day. I did save a piece for Rob. When he got home from work, I made him try a piece and told him to tell me what he tasted in the chocolate. “Is that rosemary?” he asked. SO CLOSE!

Via, Chocolate

Starbucks Via Refreshers – Valencia Orange flavor, Corazona’s White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Oatmeal Squares, Justin’s Chocolate Almond Butter

You know, I had never tried the Starbucks Refreshers before. What a great introduction! The Valencia Orange flavor really took me back. It reminded me of TANG! They were so fun to try and to break up my water routine.

I had never heard of Corazona’s nor their White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Oatmeal Squares. I always love a good protein, nut or oatmeal bar for a quick breakfast or snack and these did not disappoint. I forget about macadamia nuts sometimes, even though I love nuts. It might be partially because I rarely buy them – they are expensive. But dear hubby is also allergic. Okay, better chance to keep them all to myself!

And you can never go wrong with any Justin’s nut butter. As a francophile, I adore Nutella. And somehow, somewhere along the way, Rob learned he is allergic to hazelnuts. That means All The Nutella is for Me… Mwahhhhhahahaha! But the discovery of chocolate almond butter makes it more accessible to Rob now. 😉

Huckleberry Jam, also from Idaho

Wild Huckleberry Jam, also from Idaho

I don’t know if I’ve ever had a huckleberry, much less Huckleberry Jam. New to me and from Idaho – win-win! I’ve been stirring it into my overnight oats. Sometimes I add a few chocolate chips, chia seeds {from my last Foodie Penpal} and slivered almonds, too. Perfect!

And last, but most certainly not least:

YUMMMAY

Angie’s Salted Caramel Kettle Corn

“NUMMAY!”

Recently, I learned that Angie’s Kettle Corn is out of Minnesota. My husband and I love the stuff. But how is it that I’ve never had nor have I even known about the Salted Caramel flavor?! Thank you, Amber, for introducing me. Well, maybe it isn’t a good thing. I did open the bag to give it a try and probably ate half of it… Next time, pour a serving into a bowl, Carrie! 😉

Thank you so much, Amber, for your thoughtful package and the kind note, too.

I love that you put some of your favorites in the box as well as items from your homeland.

Cheers to you!

January Foodie Pen Pal Reveal!

Standard

This month, my Foodie Penpal Box came from Terri in Georgia.

I opened the box to find this lovely note:

Jan 2012 note

Of course, I opened to find some exciting breakfast treats!

Jan 2012 Contents

Vanilla Bean Scone Mix, English Breakfast Tea, S’mores Pankcake Mix, Maple Syrup, Sarabeth’s Peach Apricot Fruit Spread, Double Chocolate Hot Cocoa Mix with a Snowflake Mug

I love breakfast! It’s been a really long time since I’ve had pancakes and I’ve never had S’mores ones! And wait a minute… I can make scones myself?! I guess the only times I’ve ever eaten scones were in coffee shops. When I think about someone making scones, I picture a woman slaving away in the kitchen with flour on her face… making them from scratch. I guess that’s one reason why I’ve never attempted them. With this box, I determined we had some yummy weekend breakfasts coming up!

Smores Pancakes

S’mores Pancakes with Maple Syrup – so good!

I sipped the hot cocoa one night when we had a bazillion-below-zero degree weather. It was the perfect warming treat. I do drink tea from time to time, but not often black tea. I experimented and found that I like black tea with a teaspoon of cream and a teaspoon of honey. As a side note, when I pulled my honey bear out of the cupboard, I couldn’t get any honey out of it. It was stuck in the bottom of the bottle! So I put a mug of water in the microwave for two or three minutes and gave my honey bear a bath to loosen it up a bit:

my

Bath time for Honey Bear!

We enjoyed some of tea the morning I made the scones. I couldn’t believe how easy they were to make! I just added whipping cream, kneaded the dough, flattened it into a circle, cut it into triangles and baked! The box said to bake for 15 to 20 minutes. I took them out at 15 and they were already a little overdone on the bottom. But, oh that vanilla bean flavor! The only scones I’ve ever had were made of some sort of berry or fruit. I can tell you that these vanilla bean ones rival those! And I wouldn’t be lying if I told you that vanilla bean scone dough is just as good as cookie dough. 😉

Scone

The Peach Apricot Jam was the perfect accompaniment to the Vanilla Bean Scones.

We thoroughly enjoyed our special winter breakfasts.

Thank you so much, Terri!

This month, my package went to Jillian in Connecticut. Because Jillian doesn’t have a blog, I invited her to write a post on her goodies, but only if she wanted to… So stay tuned tomorrow to find out what I sent and learn more about her!

What is your favorite breakfast and why?

November Foodie Pen Pals – Reveal Day!

Standard

This is the second time I’ve participated in the Foodie Pen Pals program!

~

Today is Reveal Day.

Q: What does this mean?

A: I reveal what was sent to me by my Foodie Pen Pal. In addition, the person I sent a box to reveals about what I sent.

This month, I sent a package to Chelsea over at Yasha’s Crazy Life. If you want to see what was in her package, be sure to check out her blog! {Teaser: The wasabi almonds were her favorite.}

I received my package from Antonia, who lives in a small town from Tennessee.

The first thing I discovered in my box:

Banana Moon Pies!

My husband said he hasn’t seen Moon Pies since he’s lived down south. Here’s the kicker: He’s allergic to bananas, so these were all mine! Muwhahahahahaha! In addition, these were actually mini Moon Pies, so they were only 110 calories per pie! {I say were because they are long gone.} Antonia says that Moon Pies are a Tennessee tradition. Gotta love that.

The entire contents of the box:

My November Foodie Pen Pal Box

In addition to the Moon Pies I found Peanut Brittle, Cascadian Farms Organic Cinnamon Raisin Granola, Old Timey Syrup with Antonia’s favorite buckwheat pancake recipe, Pocky Chocolate-covered Biscuit Sticks, Quaker Quakes Cheddar Cheese Rice Snacks, Nescafe Memento Mocha Coffee Mix.

Her hand written note described her favorite snacks:

All Foodie Pen Pal Boxes must contain something written – it’s what makes you a pen pal, after all!

I’ve tried everything except for the syrup and pancake recipe. My husband said the peanut brittle is the best he’s ever had! The granola makes a perfect breakfast cereal. I followed Antonia’s suggested and stirred the Pocky into my coffee. Those are long gone. The rice cake snacks were perfect for on-the-go. And the Nescafe Mocha was so easy: Just add hot water. I liked this so much that I’m going to use the coupon Antonia included to get me some more!

Thank you, Antonia, for such a lovely Foodie Package!

Now that you know all of this, please note that there has been a *change* for December:

For the month of December only, the Foodie Pen Pals program will be donating to charities set up for Hurricane Sandy victims. Instead of being assigned a Pen Pal and spending $15 on a box of food, participants are encouraged to donate that $15 to the FPP Charity for Hurricane Sandy program. There are currently over 1000 Foodie Pen Pals. Therefore, if we could raise $15,000. Won’t you join us?

As I understand it, the Foodie Pen Pal program will return to its original state in January.

If you’d like to see what I received in my last FPP box, click here.

Did you have a Pen Pal as a kid?

My First Foodie Pen Pal!

Standard

In August, I participated for the first time in the Foodie Pen Pals program!

And today is Reveal Day!

I’d been reading about Foodie Pen Pals on several other blogs I follow and after reading the requirements and learning how fun and easy it was to participate, I decided to give it a try. I mean, you know I love to try new things, right?

The best part for all of you reading out there:

You don’t need to have a blog to participate!

Here’s how it works:

1. You sign up by the 4th of the month for each month that you want to participate.

2. By the 5th, you’re assigned a Foodie Pen Pal for that month.

3. You communicate with your pen pal about any food allergies or preferences, as well as where to ship their package.

4. By the 15th of the month, you send $15 worth of food to your pen pal that may include homemade goodies, local treats or just some of your favorite discoveries that you want to share! The box must also contain something handwritten.

5. You receive a package from another Foodie Pen Pal, who was assigned to you.

6. If you are like me, you squeal with delight when your package arrives.

7. You enjoy said goodies, which you may have never known about otherwise.

8. If you are a blogger, you post about the package you received on the last day of the month – Reveal Day! {If you are not a blogger, you do not need to do anything, but thank your Pen Pal, of course! However, if your Pen Pal does blog, you can choose to write a guest post, if you so wish.}

My very first Foodie Pen Pal package came from Frieda at Purple Oven Mitt. We’ve corresponded and she is so sweet! I love her blog and her no-nonsense, healthy recipes, too.

August Foodie Pen Pal package from Frieda at Purple Oven Mitt

Now picture me opening this package and squealing with delight! Frieda wrote me a nice personal note on the enclosed card, too. So sweet!

Goodness Knows Very Cranberry Snack Squares are made with Cocoa Flavanols to “support circulation of nutrients”. What does this mean?

Here’s your explanation!

I love any excuse to have chocolate. And dark is my favorite! On a couple of occasions, I took these to work and had them either as breakfast or a snack with a cup of coffee. Mmm… {I adore dark chocolate with coffee!}

I love that it’s not just a bar, that they come in little squares. It makes me feel like I’m getting 4 little treats!

Next up…

Kettle Brand Almond Butter

I didn’t know that Kettle made almond butter! Isn’t that the company that makes Kettle Chips?

I’d never bought almond butter before… until a week prior to receiving this Foodie Pen Pals box! In fact, I only bought a one-serving pouch of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter as suggested on another blog so I could try out making her best Green Monster Smoothie. I fell in love with the smoothie, but during Weekend Pantry Challenge, I cut myself off because I was out of almond butter and insisted that I could only cook from the pantry that weekend! Sure, I could have substituted peanut butter, but why change up a good thing?!

After receiving the almond butter from Frieda, I’ve been able to satisfy this new addiction ever since!

In fact, I enjoyed one of these smoothies night-before-race-day and I’m attributing that to me shaving off about a minute and a half of my most recent 5k race! 😉 Tee hee. I have now dubbed this smoothie the Magic Smoothie.

Canterbury Naturals Harvest Moon Vegetable Classic Artisan Soup Mix

I haven’t tried this item from my Foodie Pen Pals package yet. Why? Because there is a great recipe for Chicken Soup on the back. I am now hoarding it for that cold, rainy fall day when it will warm me up perfectly!

Chicken Soup Instructions

Thank you again, Freida!

If you’d like to see what I sent to my August Foodie Pen Pal, Noelle, check her out her blog called Norrey which depicts her love and life with her husband, Torrey. This month, they celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary, so be sure to stop by and send them some love!

My wonderful experience with Foodie Pen Pals was such that I want to continue. However, due to timing of international travel coming up, I may take the next two months off – not because I want to, but because it wouldn’t be fair to my Foodie Pen Pal if I am late or drop the ball.

If you’re interested in participating for September, please CLICK HERE to fill out the participation form and read the terms and conditions. You must submit your information by September 4th as pairings will be emailed on September 5th.

If you were to send a foodie care package to someone you love, what would you send?

Cheers~
