R.I.P. Goodies, Hello Love with Food

Standard

Subscription Box Saturday: Food Box Edition

~

I was sad to receive this email this past month:

028They don’t explain exactly why they are discontinuing the subscription box service, but at the $7 price-point (including shipping), I still question if subscription boxes can thrive. Although if anyone could swing it, you’d think Wal-Mart could. The email has me curious what is in store next that they cannot share.

Here was the contents of my final Goodies box:

051Of course, all things chocolate are long-gone. Everything in the box had a thin dust of what seemed like flour over it. Then I realized that it was coming from the foccacia mix. I still want to make it, but I wonder if it’ll turn out because I’m not sure how much of the mix was lost! I have not tried the other goodies, but they all are things that would be perfect on-the-go.

Love with Food

For those of you who subscribed to Goodies, I think you will be happy if you take the $5 off offer and come over to Love with Food.

Why? The subscription is more – $10 + $2 shipping. But for each box that ships out, a meal is donated to a hungry child. You can certainly feel good about that! I also feel like that the products in the LWF box are usually more new-to-me and a bit healthier and/or less processed. They do have fun themes, too.

October’s theme?

Scary Delicious!

It was quite appropriate for Halloween. Here are the scary contents:

chocolate Pizzelle Crisps from Silk City Snacks

Chocolate Pizzelle Crisps

Verdict? Meh. I’d rather have one piece of Dove Dark Chocolate (35 calories) than this 100-calorie bag.

Triple Berry Glee Gum

Triple Berry Glee Gum

I love that Glee Gum uses brown rice and cane sugar. It’s kind of a novelty, but I’m still not lovin’ this gum.

Caveman Cookies

Caveman Cookies

Dark photo – sorry. But I loved these! They are made with a mixture of pumpkin seeds and maple syrup. Festive and yummy!

Torie and Howard Organic Hard Candies

(not pictured)

I didn’t notice that they were even in the box until later. My favorite flavor of the bunch was the d’anjou pear and cinnamon!

Vinaigerie Gingras Pixo Pearls

Vinaigerie Gingras Pixo Pearls

What? These are apple cider vinegar pearls. Not exactly sure what to do with them yet. Need to go to The Google.

Happy Squeeze Fruit and Veggie Twist

Happy Squeeze Fruit and Veggie Twist

I brought this on our road trip back to Green Bay one weekend. Not bad with both the fruit and the veggies. {I’ve had the applesauce and other fruit squeeze pouches before.} I shared it with the pooches, because Sophie couldn’t get enough out of that pouch! She loved it! I may have to mash up some blueberries, apple and carrots for her dinner some time. That pouch is only 60 calories.

Dang Toasted Coconut Chips

Dang Toasted Coconut Chips

These are appropriately named because DANG! are they good! What’s interesting is that I first tasted these when the arrived in my very first Goodies Box. I guess some things come full circle. I’ve even sent these to a couple of Foodie Penpals. This will make anyone who loves coconut (and maybe even those who don’t!) very, very snackfully happy!

Kind Bar

Kind Bar

I love Kind Bars and want to try all the flavors. So I’m quite happy any time one ends up in any of my subscription boxes!

BONUS COUPON!

BONUS COUPON!

Love with Food doesn’t often put these kinds of coupons in their boxes, but you can’t exactly ship this item. So it’s a great idea! I’m looking forward to picking up a Lean Cuisine “Honestly” Good Entree to find out what they are all about.

I have a few new boxes in the works because I found some great trial coupon codes! You’ll learn about them in the next month or two. If you have any questions about any of them, let me know because they make the perfect gift!

If someone were to sign you up for a subscription box as a gift, which one or which type would you like it to be?

Cheers~

September Food Boxes {And a Giveaway!}

Standard

Subscription Box Saturday – Food Box Edition

I know it’s a little late, but I wanted to share what I received in my September food Boxes. And I’ve got something to giveaway!

Love with Food $10/mo + $2 shipping {1 meal donated to a hungry child for each box shipped)

LWF-Sept

September Love with Food Box

The contents of this entire box was Gluten Free!

  • Milas Foods Pepper and Artichoke Bruschetta – Just wasn’t my thing
  • Betty Lou Blueberry Fruit Bar – Mmmm…
  • Wild Garden Hummus Dip – I’d had this before and wasn’t a fan, so I passed it along to someone else.
  • Bare Fruit Cinnamon Apple Chips – I always love these and they are so much better in terms of ingredients compared to some that I’ve bought on a whim at the store.
  • Cosmos Cinnamon Crunch – We’ve had caramel corn from Cosmos before. So yummy. This one is just as good!
  • Cheddar Cheese Organicasaurus Cute, but really just tasted like styrofoam… assuming I know what that tastes like.
  • Licious Organics Cherry Berry Raw Cookie Seriously. I don’t remember.
  • YumEarth Organics Fruit Snacks I don’t normally eat fruit snacks, but these are some of the best I’ve ever had.

Lots of fun snacks from Love with food this month!

Goodies$7/month (includes shipping). It looks like I took a lot more photos of this box this month.

September Goodies Box

September Goodies Box

September contents:

  • Gimbals Scottie Dogs – How cute are these? Some people hate black licorice. I don’t mind it. It’s actually supposed to be good for digestion.

Goodies-Scottie Dogs

  • Thyme honey – I’ve yet to try!
  • Broccoli Cilantro Savory Tea – I’m not a fan of broccoli, but this might be refreshing with the cilantro. I will give it a try soon.

Goodies-Savory Tea

  • Zone Greek Yogurt Chocolate Bar – Good, but I still love KIND Bars more. There are a lot of ingredients in this one. I was about to turn over the package so that you could see, but Shamrock photobombed me and I thought it was too cute.
  • Goodies-ZoneBare Fruit Fuji Apple Chips – YES! Another package. YUM!
  • Nestle PureLife Lemon Water – It’s, uh… lemon water.
  • Kashi Sundried Tomato, Basil & Feta Hummus Chips – These were much better than I thought they’d be. Lots of flavor and not as styrofoam-y as i had expected!

Two great boxes this month! However, my giveaway has nothing to do with these boxes. But it does have to do with a Food Box. I received $25 HelloFresh Gift Card in one of my boxes a few months back. I didn’t think I’d sign up. But just when I read some great reviews on the company and decided to join, I found out that they do not deliver to my area. ;(

Therefore, I’d like to give away this gift card to someone who can use it. It expires 12/31/13, so please only sign up for the giveaway if you can the gift card. Check out the HelloFresh website for more information and to determine if they ship where you live. They do list each state they ship-to, but I’ve also learned that they only ship to certain areas in certain states, so be sure to enter your zip code.

Feel free to comment on this post today, but if you’d like to take enter the drawing for the giveaway, please note one thing you found interesting on the HelloFresh website!

Giveaway will close next Subscription Box Saturday – October 12th at 11:59pm.

Cheers~

Can Subscription Boxes Thrive?

Standard

Subscription Box Saturday

Last week’s $1 Box post got me thinking… How do subscription boxes really work? With Cravebox {which was my favorite one that I tried} going out of business and the Pawalla company deciding to discontinue their subscription box service, I’m really wondering.

Do subscription boxes get samples from companies as a way to advertise their businesses?

Beauty Army samples are truly samples. They are usually tiny packages meant for one-use only. I can’t believe I pay $12 for that box. The good news is that I can skip any month I’d like. I’ve skipped the last few months because I couldn’t find six worthwhile samples to choose.

Or do they buy the items {especially if they are full-sized} in bulk and get a deal on them?

How do they determine how many of each sample or product they need each month when people are joining and canceling at different rates each month?

This would be especially difficult for those trying to put together a fun theme.

Then there’s the shipping.

A lot of times shipping is included in the box price or is rather inexpensive. But I do know that most boxes that I receive would cost me $10 to $15 to ship myself. Sure, businesses can get a deal and ship at a bulk rate, but the rates aren’t that good to absorb all of those costs.

A case of wine costs anywhere from $35 to $50 to ship due to its weight and adult signature restrictions. But I’d still get flack from guests at tasting events when they are charged a $9.95 flat fee on their order, regardless of size, to ship to the host. It’s a good deal, people, especially when you are already getting a good deal on high quality wine. The shipping is not built into the price of the bottle. By comparison, consider the fact that a winery in California wanted me to charge me $60 to ship a case of their wine I loved.

But back to the boxes…

Sometimes when I think about what a deal a box is, I wonder if the subscription box companies make any money.  There are a lot of subscription boxes out there. And I’ve found that most of them are a lot more expensive than the ones I receive. There are some I’d love to try, but shelling out $30 or $50 per month just isn’t an option when I don’t know what it’s going to be like.

My August Food Boxes…

I have noticed that the very inexpensive Goodies Box I receive {just $7} has scaled back, too. Or at least they had in August.

  • The size of their boxes has been getting smaller, but I feel that they are packed much more nicely.
  • They no longer include a card describing the products. Instead, the recipient is instructed to go online. I think this would save time and money if a product doesn’t work out or when they put different products in different boxes.
  • But this month, the items I received were smaller sample sizes and they looked skimpier in the box.
August Goodies Box

August Goodies Box {clockwise from top left}: Natural Intentions Veggie Chips, Alo Light Orange & Passion Fruit Drink, Pronto! Caol Cafe Blues Liquid Brewstick, Hidden Valley Ranch Sunflower Seeds, Tangy Zangy Twisties Sour Wild Berry Snacks, Poplets

I can’t complain. This is the least expensive box I get! But the fact that they are scaling back might have something to do with the economics of subscription boxes. What do you think?

Fave item in the box? The Brewstick! It was a great one-serving cup of coffee for me when my husband was out of town one weekend. And it is liquid, so it doesn’t leave behind any gross leftover granuals that some instant coffee packets do.

The Poplets reminded me of the Pop’d Kerns that we have in Minnesota, but the flavor and texture of Pop’d Kerns flavor are sooooo much better!

~

On the other hand, Love with Food always seems to come through for me! Maybe it just seems like a lot that they pack into that small box of theirs, but I like it. I also love their themes each month. Most of their products are all-natural or organic or GMO-free. The bonus is that I usually haven’t had most of them before, so I’m discovering something new all of the time. And how they are donating a meal to a hungry child for every box shipped, I don’t know. The box is only $10 per month + $2 shipping.

August Love with Food Box

August Love with Food Box {clockwise from top left}: Sahale  Fruit & Almond Crunchers, Dizzy Pig BBQ Spice Rub, Harvest Crisps Baked Snapea Crisps, Aunty Sally’s Creamy Original Pralines, Good Boy Organics BOPS Sea Salt Potato Crisps, Project 7 Sugar-Free Fresh Mint Tubes, Rip van Wafels Caramel Amsterdam Waffle Cookie, El Pinto Salsa

Fave item in this box? The Rip van Wafel Caramel Waffle Cookie! I received this in a Goodies Box earlier this year. So I got a second chance not to let it melt and fall into my mug o’ coffee like I did last time. 😉

In my subscription boxes, I often get great coupons, too! I’m talking $1 and $2 off coupons, none of these “save 35 cents when you buy 4” ones you get with the Sunday newspaper. Sometimes I’ve received coupons for BOGOs as well as FREE items. I like it when they do that because it means they want you to try the product, but it really isn’t shippable.

And look below, I dropped the ball and missed getting you this discount code for Love with Food by Aug 31st. But they are still offering the additional points, so it’s possible they may still be accepting the code. It’s worth a try, right?! Click here to enroll.

LWF2

If you are wondering which other subscriptions boxes I’d like to try, here are a few on my wish list. Anybody want to go shopping for me? 😉

  • HelloFresh – They send you all of the ingredients to make three meals, down to the spices. I received a $25 gift card toward the service in another subscription box, but it still seemed a little pricey and too good to be true. Then I read some incredible reviews about this service. I was all set to join when I discovered that they do not ship to Minnesota. I will have to do a giveaway for that gift card! I don’t want it to go to waste.
  • Taste Trunk (either the Gourmet or Healthy Box) – Specializing in higher end gourmet food products.
  • Hungry Globetrotter – Food inspired by a different region of the world.
  • Stitch Fix – Personal Clothing Shopper. Would love to try this when I’m down to size. 😉
  • Escape Monthly – A vacation in a box!
  • Ellie – Fitness Clothing Box (Again, one to try when I reach my goal. Could be a great reward!)

I’ve also always wanted to belong to a fruit-of-the-month or cheese-of-the-month club. The above more expensive boxes are probably worth it, but you don’t know until you try them. I would like to try them for a deal, but then is it fair to them if we cancel after that?

How do you think most subscription box services work?

If there is one box you could try, what would it be?

Cheers~
Carrie

All the Boxes

Standard

Subscription Box Saturday: All the Boxes Edition

Here are all of the Subscription Boxes I received in July, in the order I received them. Apologies for the poor picture quality, but you get the point.

contents:

Birchbox – July 2013

  • WEI™ Pomegranate Buffing Beads (Add to your own face wash)
  • WEI™ Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask

Love with Food

Contents

Lots of yum!

  • Twangerz Snack Toppings – Different flavored salts.
  • KuKuRuZa GMO-Free Gourmet Caramel Popcorn – Rob said it is likely the best CaramelCorn he’s ever had!
  • Vermont Smoke & Cure BBQ Beef Sticks – I’m not a barbecue fan, nor do I eat beef sticks very often. For Rob.
  • Lord Nut Levington Spicy Bloody Mary Peanuts – Tasted great, but not sure Bloody Mary is the descriptor I’d use.
  • Angel Mint All Natural Salt Water Taffy
  • Uncle Henry’s Pretzel Bakery Pretzel – Just a big, dry pretze.l
  • Nature’s Bakery Strawberry Fig Bar – High calorie, tastes like you’d expect.
  • NECCO Candy Wafers – Some people may find these nostalgic. They were too chalky for me.

~

Barkbox

~

Two different kinds of treats, a travel water bowl, smoothie for dogs, barkworthy chew & a squeaky toy. This was happy, happy box for the pooches this month!

~

Goodies

  • Fruit Water
  • Cosmo Creations Caramel Corn – Wait! Maybe this one was Rob’s favorite!?
  • Multi-seed Crackers – I’ve had these before and love ’em
  • Cherry Chews – A cross between jelly beans and fruit snacks. I liked that there were different cherry flavors!
  • Real Corn Chips – What corn chips should taste like.

Those are the current boxes I subscribe to. To enroll in any, click the links below.

  • Love with Food – $10/mo + $2 shipping
  • Birchbox – $10/mo (includes shipping)
  • BarkBox – $29/mo (or $19/mo when sign up for 6 months) I love this box, but I think $29 is kind of expensive. The 6 months is worth it to save $10/mo!
  • Goodies – $7/mo (includes shipping)
  • Beauty Army -$12/mo – I’m might discontinue. You can skip any month you wish. I did, only because I didn’t like the choices

I have tried other boxes as well. Here are those that I’ve discontinued.

Do you subscribe to any boxes or of-the-month clubs? Which one(s)?

Cheers~

Seaweed in My Food Boxes

Standard

Subscription Box Saturday: Food Box Edition

My June food boxes had something in common. They both came with seaweed. It turns out, I don’t mind the stuff when it comes to sushi, but I’m not a fan of the snacking kind.

Goodies Box – June 2013

Goodies-3

Pringles Stix Cheese Flavor – Rating: 4/5 | These were good. They are kind of like Cheez-its, a bit better, but in stick form. Would I buy them? Probably not. I just don’t buy that sort of snacky food. Would I eat them if put in front me? Yes!

STAX Que Rico – Adobadas Chips – Rating: 3/5 | These taste like chili powder flavored Pringles. They are fine, but not a favorite.

Duchy Originals – Highland Shortbread – Rating: 3/5 | These taste pretty authentic for shortbread, buttery and not too sweet.

Smooch Snacks Snacks – Apple, Raspberry, Peach, Chia & Acerola – Rating: 3/5 | I’ve sampled a lot of these pre-packaged fruit-sauces over the last few months. I like them because they are a very convenient way to get in your daily servings of fruit. The flavor combo was a little strange, but I didn’t mind it. I liked that the raspberry seeds were in there. (Or was that from the chia seeds?) It gave it a little more texture than the other ones on the market.

Gimme Health – Cheddar Cheese Seaweed Crumbles – Rating: 2/5 | I really wanted to like these. The cheddar was a nice touch, but seaweed snacks are still not for me.

Dream Water NightTEA Night – Rating: 2/5 | This is the opposite of 5-Hour Energy. Or at least that’s the impression I get with the packaging. I hadn’t been sleeping well lately, so I gave it a shot. No such luck.

From this photo, you’d think that this box was packaged really well:

Goodies-2But it wasn’t. The shortbread, half of the STAX chips and some of the Pringles Stix came in pieces. Too bad. 😦

~

Love with Food – June 2013

LWF-3(Sorry for the blurry photo.)

Do More Bars Gluten-Free Pineapple Coconut Cereal Bar – Rating: 4/5 | These are very good! I like the coconut pineapple flavor. They are just not something I would normally buy.

Soy Joy Bar – Rating: 2/5 | I’m just not a fan of these. I like other bars so much better. I’m not big into processed soy products either, but that’s just my personal preference.

Surf Sweets Organic Gummy Bears – Rating: 4/5 |I haven’t had gummy bears in forever. These taste good, as far as gummy bears go. If you are going to give something like this to your kids, you might as well give them some that are GMO-free and without HFCS.

Seaweed Love Roasted Seaweed Snack – Rating: 1/5 | As I mentioned earlier, I don’t mind nori when it comes to sushi, but these just aren’t my thing.

Turbana Sweet Platain Chips – Rating: 3/5 | I liked these. I think I had the salted ones before, but these are lightly sweet. Although, Kim at Living, Laughing & Losing makes her own all the time.

Flavrz Organic Liquid Drink Mix – Superfruit Flavor – Rating: 3/5 |Just add the liquid mix to a bottle of water. This was okay. I think they are supposed to be a slightly healthier alternative to Crystal Light packets. Not sure it’s something I’d run out and buy, though.

PUR Pomegranate Mint Chewing Gum – Rating: 2/5 | I was really excited to try this flavor of gum. However, the flavor did not last long and the gum quickly became hard. 😦

Smooze All Natural Conconut + Mango Fruit Ice – Rating: 4/5 | These are a nice twist on Push-Ups! It arrived in my box unfrozen of course, but I was instructed to pop it in the freezer. Shamrock wanted some and tried to steal a lick!

LWF-4

Then I realized that there were two more items in the box:

LWF-2

GoOrganic Apple & Blood Orange Hard Candies – 4/5 – It’s hard candy that’s organic. It tastes like hard candy. Not much more to say!

~

My lessons learned this week:

1) I’m not a fan of seaweed snacks.

2) Although it’s fun trying these food products, it’s a rare occasion when I’ll actually buy them myself. For now, most of them are just nice little treats.

What treats are nice when someone else gives them to you, but you wouldn’t necessarily buy them yourself?

Cheers~

Which Food Box to Keep?

Standard

Subscription Box Saturday – Food Box Edition

I know I subscribe to a lot of monthly boxes. But I really try to follow this rule: Only subscribe to one box of any kind. However, I’ve broken this rule with food/snack boxes. I belong to two. It’s tough deciding which one to keep! Generally speaking, I think I like my Love with Food box a little bit better. Why? They introduce me to new products that not only taste good, but are often healthy or just better in terms of the quality of ingredients and processes used. I also love the themes. However, I do get some tasty items in my Goodies box as well. And that one’s only $7! It’s hard to quit that! Here’s a comparison of the May contents.

Subscription Box: Love with Food

Premise: Sample the best gourmet food products delivered to your door!”

Cost: $10/month + $2 shipping. (Special deals if you purchase more than one month at a time)

Extra Benefits: Review products, share recipes and refer friends for points toward free products.

What’s Special: For each box shipped and each order placed, a meal is donated to a hungry child.

To Join: Click here.

May’s Theme: Mother’s Day Breakfast in Bed

From Left, Clockwise:

Bonne Maman Strawberry Preserves: I’ve received Bonne Maman in a few different boxes now. I’ve always loved this product since I first had it in France nearly 20 years ago. So it’s a welcome treat! I also love the mini sample jars they come in, which I reuse like in this post.

Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning Blend: We haven’t used this yet, but I’ve read that a little can go a long way! I intend to add it to pasta sauce or to season veggies this summer! Maybe I’ll even switch up my usual popcorn routine with a sprinkle, too. Did you know that of everywhere I’ve been, I think New Orleans has some of the best food in the world?!

Mrs. May’s Naturals Strawberry Pineapple Crunch: While these little nuggets tasted good because the ingredients went well together, I thought that the clusters were a little big. It seemed like a lot of calories for just a few little bites! This was the box’s “mystery item” which must be something they recently started. Instead of the insert stating what the product is, you have to go online to find our more info.

LWF insert

Caffe Borsa Hand Drip Single Origin Coffee: I’m stashing this away for a trip when coffee might not be available.

Snapz Crisps – Tomato Crunch: I love tomatoes. They are one of my favorite things on this planet. I was so excited to try these at only 40 calories a bag. The flavor, though, was very concentrated and a lot sweeter than I expected. I could only eat half the bag until it got to be a little too much. I was surprised how satisfied I was on just 20 calories. I think these would be great in a salad to have that added crunch without the carbs or fat of croutons or nuts. Have you tried these before?

Bali’s Best Latte Candy: These were the first to come out of the box! I enjoyed one while Rob had the other. Love these! There is not much  more to say. Coffee-flavored candies? I’m in!

Biscotti Bari Authentic Almond Biscotti: I love biscotti and the almond, almost amaretto flavor of this hit the spot. Yesiree – tastes authentic to me!

“Great Full” Vegan Sweet Potato Cookie by the Cookie Department: The phrase “Vegan Sweet Potato Wellness Cookie” just made the cookie sound disgusting to me. I am not a sweet potato fan. In addition, it sounded like a lame attempt to come up with a cookie for a vegan.

NOT SO! This cookie was delightful! I was completely surprised. I loved, particularly, the molasses flavor. This was the big surprise of the box for me. My only gripe: It uses the words Vegan and Wellness to make it sound like a healthy cookie. But when I look at the fiber and protein content, it’s not all that impressive, especially since one cookie is 2 servings!

Subscription Box: Goodies

Premise: “Receive a monthly Taster’s Box filled with exciting snacks for you to enjoy. The monthly Taster’s Box includes 5-8 trial-sized snacks and treats enabling you to discover your favorite new goodies.”

Cost: $7/month, includes shipping

Extra Benefits: Review and rate products, upload photos and complete a profile to earn points and unlock rewards.

What’s Special: I guess I’d have to say the price. Although Goodies is a company owned by Wal-mart.

To Join: Click here.

May’s Theme: I think Goodies stopped doing themes about two months ago. You now receive a note in the box instructing to go online to learn more about the products, rather than receiving an insert describing them. When I logged in online, this month’s header read:

May 2013 – Taster’s Box

Sweet and sour. Smoky and spicy. Fresh and refreshing. We’ve got all the bases covered when it comes to flavor this month.

Goodies May Contents

Blurry May Goodies Box Contents

From Left, Clockwise:

Bronco Bob’s Mango Chipotle Sauce: I haven’t tried this yet, but I intend to make the recipe on the back on a night when Rob is out golfing. {You know, that whole fins and feathers thing… oh and mango.}

Zico Coconut Water: I have just started to learn about coconut water by following Paleo bloggers. I’ve found some that I like and some that I don’t. My list of Goodies online wants me to rate a chocolate-flavored coconut water. WHAT?! I certainly did not receive a chocolate one! This big bottle was 4 servings. I poured two into a water bottle to sip on two separate days. It was good, but not the best I’ve had. Still loving the ones with pulp thanks to Kristen at Change of Pace!

Super Seedz Sea Salt Pumpkin Seeds: Tasty change from the normal popcorn or almonds I eat as a savory snack!

Seedz

Wholly Guacomole: I love when subscription boxes know that they can’t send you something, but really want you to try it. So they send you a coupon for a free package! While it’s just as easy to buy an avocado and mash to make your own guacamole, sometimes it’s just nice to have a quick little package to take to work. I like the 100 calorie packs that are just the right serving size without worrying about when you are going to use up the rest of the avocado before it browns too much. That is what I’m going to buy with this coupon!

Chipotle BBQ Beanitos: You know how I feel about BBQ flavors. So I saved these for Rob. I did steal a chip or two and we were both really surprised how the bean element gave these chips so much flavor! Oh boy, I’d love to try another variety.

Beanitos

Blue Raspberry and Pink Lemonade Gummy Straws: These do not interest me. They are going straight home with grandma to my nephew. He’ll love ’em! It’s my job as the aunt to sugar him up, right?!

California Olive Ranch Olive Oil: I so want to do a post about olive oil… the labeling, the flavors etc. I used one of the two sample packages when sauteing some veggies this past week. However, I tasted a little on its own and realized that this was too good for sauteing; it should have been a finishing oil! Also, it’s cold pressed – a bonus. More to come on that in a future post.

EVOO

Numi Moroccan Mint Tea: I am on a tea kick and this one was refreshing and did not disappoint! Plus a coupon to order more.

Numi Mint Tea

These two boxes were excellent this month, so I’m still having a hard time choosing just one. Enjoy the rest of your memorial day weekend!

When it comes to flavor, which spices or sauces knock your socks off?

Cheers~

Goodies + Wine?

Standard

Subscription Box Saturday: Goodies Edition

Rob and I have declared an UNPLUG DAY today, so this post was obviously pre-written. 😉 Don’t expect to hear from me for another 24 hours…

In my $7 April 2013 Goodies Box, I received…

asdfad

April 2013 Goodies Box

Look closely, do you see a $50 gift card for WINE? This was very strange to me because there was no mention that they’d be sending this! This month, there was no insert describing the products, only instructions to go online to read about the items in the box. What’s more is that this is the same gift card that came in my Girls Night In Cravebox this month, too! I’ll be reviewing all of that wine separately when it arrives. 😉

As a Goodies Box member, I can earn rewards when I:

  • Rate items in my box. (Bot all boxes are the same!)
  • Write reviews of the items.
  • Upload photos with my reviews.

I personally like to take photos of the back of the product where you can find the nutrition facts and ingredients. Those are sometimes hard to find online and it’s what intrigues me most about new products.

When reviewing items, they used to ask the following question:

In a perfect world*, would you eat this?

* like if calories didn’t matter
~
Always? Sometimes? Never again?

However, I noticed that this month, that has changed to:

Would you buy this product?*

Yes ~ Maybe ~ No

* like if calories didn’t matter

Here are my thoughts on the items from the April 2013 Box:

Celsius Sparkling Orange Drink

(This drink claims to “energize, boost metabolism and help burn calories.”)

asd

This drink tastes like an energy drink, maybe slightly better, but I don’t drink them. But you might like it if you do! A good alternative to diet soda, perhaps.

Green Giant  Sweet Potato Multigrain Chips

Goodies-Sweet Potato Chips

I’m not a huge sweet potato fan, but I liked the thin chip and light flavor of these!

Rating? 3/5 ~ Buy Again? Maybe

Olomomo Nuts – Chai Bliss Almonds

Ingredients & Nutrition Facts were not listed on this packaging.

I love flavored almonds and I had not yet had Chai ones. I’m starting to get into sweeter over savory nuts!

Rating? 4/5 ~ Buy Again? Maybe

True Bar – Fruit & Nut Bar

adfad

Sort of reminds me of a Larabar

sdfad

Like many other fruit and nut bars, but a little sweeter. Notice how brown rice syrup is the first ingredient? I’m not sure what that is, anyway.

Rating? 3/5 ~ Buy Again? Maybe

~

Angie’s Popcorn – Sweet & Salty Kettlecorn

I’ve had Angies Kettlecorn before and it’s the closest thing that you will get to real fair-style kettlecorn, only pre-packaged. I know people who are hooked! Check out the ingredients – pretty minimal.

I’ve had a few Zone Bars before and while they don’t taste much different from other protein bars, this one really tasted like cookie dough! My only concern is the ingredients. You might not be able to read all of them, but look at all of them! I’ll eat these when they come in my subscription boxes, but I don’t think I’ll ever buy them. There are just better choices out there.

Rating? 3/5 ~ Buy Again? No

Do you schedule a day to unplug?

How does it work for you?

What are the “rules”?

What do you choose to do on those days?

Happy Saturday!
Cheers~
